David Traupman
Members absent: Miryam Rojas
Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
The meeting was called to order at 6:20 p.m.
Correction to the minutes of the April 8, 2014, meeting. Page one, paragraph four, line
one; change ‘cannot replace’ to ‘should not be expected to replace’. Mr. Traupman
made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 10, 2014, meeting with
correction. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep reported that the Commission has $85.93 remaining in their FY ’14 budget
and $2369 in the donation account.
It was noted that there was a great turnout for the library reception for artist Federico
Bianchi.
Discussion turned to Green Day. At this time the event is in question since the Village
Council voted 2 to 2 to subsidize funds for Village services (recreation/police/public
works) at the event. Last year the costs exceeded $7000. It was decided to table
discussion on Green Day until the August meeting.
Ms. Salt and Mr. Stock expressed an interest in having a folk concert for a Friday Night
Live event. Mr. Stock asked if the Commission has enough money to sponsor two
events. Mr. Estep said the Commission’s budget is anticipated to be $6500 for FY ’15
pending Council approval. Ms. Salt would like to have one folk concert and another
event that is yet to be determined. A movie night was suggested for either October or
November. Gallery Night has a tentative date of January 24. Unity Day is March 7, with
either a clothesline art exhibit or a police car exhibit. Ms. Goodman suggested the
Bakehouse could have an art exhibit. Ms. Salt would like to do something involving the
residents of Miami Shores such as paint an old vehicle or have a chainlink fence piece of
art similar to what schools do to promote drug awareness.
Discussion turned to new business. Mr. Traupman suggested having a call to artists
over the summer. It was suggested that the Commission also look at the runners up
from last year’s call to artists. Mr. Traupman will bring information about these artists to
the August meeting. Ms. Goodman suggested artist Aaron Curry who currently has an
exhibit at the Lincoln Center for exhibit on Village Hall’s north lawn. Ms. Goodman will
contact Mr. Curry’s representatives for more information.
F.A.C. mtg., 6/10/14, pg. 2 of 2
It was noted that the Village has $100,000 in liability insurance once the art is on Village
property; this covers the artists exhibiting at the library and the art in public places artist.
Ms. Ackley suggested using a freelance student photographer from Barry for $25 to
document Commission events. Ms. Salt made a motion to approve $25/hour to pay
Remijin Camping for a half hour to document the October artist exhibit. Motion
seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
