2014-04-08 FAC Minutes Revised Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on April 8, 2014. Members present: Susan Ackley Janet Goodman Abbie Salt David Traupman Members absent: Maria Echevarri Taddeo Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. Mr. Traupman made a motion to approve the minutes of the March 11, 2014, meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Salt and unanimously approved. Mr. Estep showed the new 9/11 plaque to the members. It was noted that the spring concert was enjoyable for all those in attendance. It was noted that a Miami-Dade grant, which is a matching fund grant, should not be expected to replace the Miami Shores Community Alliance Grant. It was noted that the April artist reception with Jorge Pantoja was cancelled; the artist requested that his work be tacked to the wall. The Egret was able to cancel the ad before it went to print. A suggestion was made for Miami Shores’ resident Federico Bianchi for the artist reception. A tentative date of May 16th was suggested. Ms. Salt made a motion to have an artist reception on May 16th with artist Federico Bianchi. Motion seconded by Mr. Traupman and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to Village Hall’s art in public places sculpture. It was related that Tom Scicluna can created a site specific sculpture for $500. This artist works with ‘found items’. At this time Mr. Scicluna has nothing available to exhibit. Ms. Salt noted his work is not appealing texture-wise; the Commission would need a rendering of his work to get a visual of his type of work. Discussion turned to the Memorial Day program. Ms. Goodman has researched books relating to 9/11 artifacts. The Commission chose ‘Memory Remains: 9/11 Artifacts at Hanger 17’. The October 2014 art exhibit will feature Alissa Christine on October 10th. Art exhibits are displayed for a length of one month per the library board. Green Day is scheduled for October 18th. A suggestion was made for message music artists such as Grant Livingston. Ms. Ackley suggested $250 for a 45-minute set. There is no budget set aside for this event. Ms. Ackley suggested that the musicians be paid through the spring concert budget, which would need approval from the Mayor since this budget was set aside for spring concerts. Another suggestion was made for Valerie Wisecracker who F.A.C. mtg., 4/8/14, pg. 2 of 2 plays environmental music. Ms. Goodman noted there are four artists, friends with Mr. Livingston, who could perform (musicians in the round). Artist Amy Carol Webb was also suggested. A suggestion was made to possibly offer $600 for four artists to play “in the round”. It was noted that the Commission sponsored two artists last year. Discussion turned to the photo contest. Ms. Goodman suggested a juried art show instead of the public voting for the winning photos. Ms. Salt suggested a public art show, which would be a chance for local artists to display their art work, not necessarily to win. Mr. Traupman said there is no rush to replace the photo contest at this time. The Commission is offering many other events now. Another idea at Unity Day would be to acquire a decommissioned police car and have the kids paint it with washable paint. Mr. Traupman noted that the Egret ad for the May exhibit will cost $235. Ms. Salt made a motion to allocate $235 for the May Egret ad. Motion seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved. It was suggested that the Commission allow outside people to post on the Fine Arts Facebook page with approval from Commission members. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
