A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI SHORES VILLP.GE COUNCIL SUPPORTING
ADOPTION OF A COUNTY-WIDE ORDINANCE TO PROHIBIT THE SALE
AND DISTRIBUTION OF CANDY FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS WHICH
ARE COMMONLY MARKETED TO YOUNG ADULTS; PROVIDING FOR
DISTRIBUTION OF RESOLUTION AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, The Village has been advised that candy-flavored tobacco products were introduced
as part of an industry trend to manufacture smokeless products in response to declining cigarette use
and the enactment of smoke-free laws throughout the Country; and,
WHEREAS, Tobacco companies appear to promote candy and alcohol flavored products that
appeal to teenagers and mask the harsh taste and reportedly high levels of absorbable nicotine; and,
WHEREAS, It has been reported that almost 90% of adult regular smokers started tobacco use
before the age of 18; and,
WHEREAS, It is reported that despite age restrictions on the sale of tobacco products, there has
been a substantial increase in cigar use amongst high school students; and,
WHEREAS, Many local governments in Florida have passed resolutions supporting the ban on
the sale and distribution of candy-flavored tobacco products; and,
WHEREAS, In order to preserve the public health and well-being of our residents, the Miami
Shores Village Council supports restricting the distribution and sale of all flavored tobacco products.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL:
Section 1. That the Village Council supports the efforts of Students Working Against Tobacco
(SWAT) to promote the adoption of laws restricting the distribution and sale of flavored tobacco
products, and supports and encourages Miami-Dade County to establish a ban on the sale and
distribution of flavored tobacco products.
Section 2. That the Village Clerk is hereby requested to provide a copy of this Resolution to the
Miami-Dade County Commission, the Miami-Dade League of Cities, and other parties as deemed
appropriate.
Section 3. That this resolution is effective immediately upon its passage.
