A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE COUNCIL,SUPPORTING
FEDERAL FUNDING OF THE PORT OF MIAMI DEEP DREDGE PROJECT
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS,the Port of Miami is the largest container port in Florida and is a vital contributor to
the local, state and national economy generating 176,000 jobs and a$17 billion economic impact to the
economy of South Florida;and,
WHEREAS, in anticipation of expanding trade and commerce,the Port of Miami has been
authorized by Congress to dredge to a depth of 50 feet,which could double the cargo capacity,
providing billions of dollars in international trade and commerce growth,and creating an additional
33,000 jobs over a ten year period; and,
WHEREAS, completion of the expansion of the Panama Canal in 2014 will necessitate deepening
of the Miami shipping channel to fifty feet in order to accommodate the larger vessels coming from the
Pacific and to keep the Port of Miami competitive with nearby ports; and,
WHEREAS,the dredging cost is estimated at$150 million,with$75 million already committed by
local sources;
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Miami Shores Village Council that:
Section 1. Miami Shores supports an allocation and appropriation of$75 million in federal
funds for the Deep Dredge project, dredging the Miami shipping channel to a depth of 50 feet.
Section 2. This Resolution becomes effective immediately upon its adoption.
