A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE
COUNCIL SUPPORTING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
STATE, DIVISION OF HISTORICAL RESOURCES,
HISTORICAL GRANTS-IN-AID APPLICATION OF THE
MIAMI SHORES COMMUNITY CHURCH FOR EXTERIOR
RESTORATION OF THE HISTORIC FEATURES AND
ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE "OLD PUMP
HOUSE. "
WHEREAS, in 1925, when the present day Village of Miami
Shores was a part of the City of Miami, the Shoreland Company
(the original developers of Miami Shores) constructed a two-story
waterworks and fire station, now known as the "Old Pump House, "
including two bays for fire trucks on the first floor, and
firemen's quarters on the second; and
WHEREAS, the "Old Pump House" was constructed in the
Mediterranean Revival Style, the architectural style typical of
the buildings constructed by the Shoreland Company, and now the
hallmark of Miami Shores architecture; and
WHEREAS, in 1930, after the area was connected to the City
of Miami water system, the "Old Pump House" served as a Community
House with grounds landscaped as "Waterworks Park; " and
WHEREAS, in 1933, the Miami Shores Community Church moved
into the building, later purchasing it in 1942; and
WHEREAS, this structure is rich in architectural elements,
features and detailing typical of the Mediterranean Revival
Style, including: exposed Pecky cypress brackets over the doors
supporting shed roofs, original historic Cuban roof tile (still
extant, but painted over) , large arched windows in the 21/ story
tower separated by a Corinthian column, original wood casement
windows with arched transoms (some of which are still extant) ,
deep relief corbelling below the tower roof line, and scored and
decorated parapet detailing along the roof line of the one story
section; and
WHEREAS, since the devastating Hurricane of September 1926,
the structure has housed the "Teatro Alegria" benches, the last
vestiges of the infamous "Pueblo Feliz" complex built by the
Shoreland Company in 1926, which was completely destroyed in that
Hurricane; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the historic significance and
essential role the "Old Pump House" has played in the development
of Miami Shores, the Village Council designated the structure a
Miami Shores Historical Landmark in 1983; and
WHEREAS, the proposed work contemplates the restoration of
the major character defining architectural details of the
structure, i.e. , the wood casement windows and the historic Cuban
tile roof; and
WHEREAS, the proposed restoration work has been thoroughly
reviewed and approved by both the Historic Preservation Board and
the Planning and Zoning Board.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MIAMI
SHORES VILLAGE, FLORIDA:
Section i_ The recitals and findings contained in the
preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference
thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this
Section.

Section 2 _ The Miami Shores Village Council hereby
supports the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical
Resources, Historical Grants-in-aid Application of the Miami
Shores Community Church for exterior restoration of the historic
features and architectural elements of the "Old Pump House. "
Section 3 _ This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption.
