SECOND AVENUE AS "WEST DIXIE HIGHWAY, " ITS ORIGINAL AND HISTORIC NAME. WHEREAS, in 1914, Carl Fisher, the original developer of Miami Beach, motivated the construction of the first north-south roadway, known as Dixie Highway, to carry tourists from the Midwest to Florida and to his Miami Beach development, with a southern terminus at what is now N.E. 2nd Avenue and 40th Street, in the neighborhood known as Buena Vista; and WHEREAS, as a result of a compromise between two competing roadway proposals advocated by the then inhabitants of Arch Creek (now North Miami) and Biscayne (now Miami Shores) , two Dixie Highways came into being - East and West; and WHEREAS, before the building of Biscayne Boulevard by the Shoreland Company beginning in 1926, the main artery from the north into Miami was the West Dixie Highway, which ran along what is now known as N.E. 2nd Avenue; and WHEREAS, although the construction of Biscayne Blvd (U.S. 1) , and most recently I-95, substantially reduced the importance of Dixie Highway, it nevertheless significantly contributed to the development of Miami Shores Village and continues to occupy a place of prominence at the commercial heart of the Village; and WHEREAS, co-designation of this historic thoroughfare would serve as a continual reminder, to both residents and visitors alike, of the importance of N.E. 2nd Avenue in the history and development of Miami Shores Village.
